What Makes Family Planning Important?

All people, but particularly women, were granted a fundamental human right at the United Nations conference on human rights in 1968. This fundamental entitlement to family planning is known as "family planning." Family planning gives couples, especially women, the option and right to plan their pregnancies and space out their births, empowering them to take charge of their lives and bodies.

The most significant development in public health in the last century has been family planning, which has encouraged more than 300 million women to use contemporary contraception.

Family planning and health are mutually dependent and extend beyond birth control to include therapy, education, access to contraception, and safe abortion.

The advantages of family planning

1. Lowers pregnancy-related risks, which in turn lowers the incidence of maternal mortality and advances the health of women.

2. Lower newborn mortality rates and support the health of both children and pregnant women

3. Lessen teenage pregnancies and procedures

4. Aids in reducing the risk of sexually transmitted illnesses

5. Contributes to reducing population increase

The prevalence of contraceptive techniques is predicted to rise by about 40% by 2025. This is brought on by the rise in the number of young individuals reaching childbearing age. Despite the rise, only a small number of couples choose not to use family planning services despite having access to them. The primary causes are adverse effects, infrequent sex, relationship disapproval, prejudice, and religious convictions.

However, people need to be aware of the various medical technologies and developments that can assist them in family planning without any negative side effects and in leading better lives. They are listed below:

1. IUD

One of the most effective reversible contraceptive techniques that, once removed, has no impact on a woman's fertility is the intrauterine device (IUD).

2. Usual Birth Control Pills

Pills that prevent pregnancy are an efficient method of birth control. They must not, however, be applied frequently. There are several myths circulating about the adverse effects of these pills, but each woman reacts differently to them, and there isn't any consistent proof that they cause weight gain or have other long-term negative effects.

3. Pills for emergency contraception

Emergency pills should be consumed within 72 hours of unprotected sex and are different from emergency contraceptive pills. They do not have any significant adverse effects, with the exception of a few women who may experience nausea, which passes in a day or two.

The current strategy in family planning programmes is to give a "cafeteria choice," or all available methods from which a person can select the preferred method of preventing an unwanted pregnancy. The main objective is to promote family planning as a manner of life.
