India responded to Pakistan's conspiracy behind the terror attack by dropping bombs in Balakot. Instead, Abhinandan, who was piloting a MiG-21 Bison jet, shot down Pakistan's American-made F-16 fighter jet that came to violate the Indian border. When the plane crashed, Abhinandan jumped down with a parachute and landed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and was imprisoned by the Pakistani army. Abhinandan spent three days in Pakistani custody. Although the Pakistan Army tortured in many ways to leak the news, no secret was leaked from Abhinandan Vardhaman.
Later, Abhinandan was released after India's strong intervention. Then the country honored him with the third highest military award, the Veera Chakra.
