Hello viewers! I'm glad to share this blog with you friends. In this blog, we will be seeing about the production of saffron and why saffron is being the costliest spice in the world. Let's begin.

Saffron is a spice obtained from the flowers called Saffron Crocus. Saffron is the crimson-red color stigma of the flower which is generally referred as saffron. The color of this spice will be in yellow orange color. Saffron is commonly used as a coloring agent in homes and industries for its satisfying color pigments. In India it is usually added in sweets and dairy products such as milk. Saffron contains amazing health benefits. Saffron contains antioxidants, that protects our cells from oxidation stress and helps in weight loss. It can also decrease the depression and brighten our thoughts.

However, it is not so easy to find this spice in our regular markets. It is also tricky to find original saffron. In most of the cases the locally available saffron could be adulterated with artificial colors. If you were able found original saffron in any of the markets, you will be shocked by hearing the price of it. The price of 1 kilogram saffron is three lakh Indian Rupees which is more costlier than some jewelries. To find the reason behind this cost, we have to understand the harvesting methods and availability of saffron content in each flower.

Firstly, saffron is a seasonal flower blooms between June to September months. Saffron flower requires some fundamental characteristics to grow. Saffron flowers takes upto 7-10 weeks to grow. At this time, it requires proper sunlight every day. Climatic changes affects its growth. It may affected by fungus which affects the quality of saffron. Availability of saffron in each flower is very low. To say in words, for one gram of saffron, 150 flowers should be harvested. Which means for 1 kilogram of saffron 1,50,000 flowers should be harvested which is more challenging. Only small stigma (a thread like structure present in flowers) are collected from the entire process. No machines can do this work. Only labors are involved in this process. Process involved for saffron production is high. Unfortunately production is very low. However, demand for saffron is high in across the globe.Multiple labors will be worked in this process. Supplying for low price results in financial loss for all the workers, suppliers and distributors. In order to compensate for all the members involved in this process, the price of saffron is high.
