Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday,” directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are also helming “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Downey’s return as Doctor Doom, rather than Iron Man, has surprised fans, particularly following his triumphant appearance at San Diego Comic-Con.

Doctor Doom, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 in 1962. As the monarch of Latveria, Doom seeks to impose order through world conquest and is the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four. He has also clashed with other Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Avengers. Ranked #4 among the greatest villains by Wizard and #3 by IGN, Doom is often considered Marvel's greatest villain.

The character has been portrayed in various media, including television, video games, and films. Previous portrayals include Joseph Culp in Roger Corman's 1994 film, Julian McMahon in the 2005 and 2007 films, and Toby Kebbell in the 2015 film. Downey Jr. will portray Doom in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (2025), “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026), and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2027).
