Facts of chemistry:-

  • The only solid elements that become liquid at room temperature are bromine and mercury. However, you can melt the gallium by holding the lumps in the warmth of your hands.
  • Unlike many substances, water expands when it freezes. Ice cubes occupy about 9% more volume than the water used to make it.
  • Pour a handful of salt into a glass of water and it will actually lower the water level instead of overflowing.
  • If you mix 0.5 liters of alcohol and 0.5 liters of water, the total amount of liquid will be less than 1 liter.
  • The average adult human body contains about 0.4 pounds or 200 grams of salt (NaCl).
  • Pure elements take many forms. For example, diamond and graphite are both in the form of pure carbon.
  • Many radioactive elements actually glow in the dark. The chemical name for water (H2O) is dihydrogen monoxide. Only J is not on the periodic table.
  • A lightning strike produces ozone, O3, which strengthens the ozone layer of the atmosphere.
  • There are only two metals other than silver, gold and copper. Oxygen gas is colorless, but liquid and solid oxygen are blue.
  • The human body contains enough carbon to supply "lead" (actually graphite) to 9,000 pencils.
  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth's atmosphere, crust, and ocean (about 49.5%).
  • Perhaps the rarest natural element in the Earth's crust is astatine. It seems that the entire crust contains about 28 grams of elements.
  • Hydrofluoric acid is highly corrosive and will melt the glass. Although corrosive, hydrofluoric acid is considered a weak acid.
  • A bucket of water contains more atoms than a bucket of water in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Helium is lighter than air, so the helium balloon floats. Bee stings are acidic, but bee stings are alkaline.
  • Chili peppers get heat from a molecule called capsaicin.
  • This molecule stimulates mammals, including humans, but birds lack the receptors responsible for their effects and are unaffected by the burning sensation.
  • Too much water can kill you. Dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • Liquid air has a bluish tint, similar to water. It cannot be frozen simply by cooling helium to absolute zero.
  • It freezes when very strong pressure is applied. By the time you feel thirsty, you have already lost about 1% of your body's water.
  • Mars turns red because its surface is rich in iron oxide and rust.
  • Hot water may freeze faster than cold water. High school students recorded the effect
