Oxygen molecule is made up of 2 atoms of oxygen which is O2 on the other hand ozone molecule is made up of 3 atoms of oxygen which is O3.Oxygen is very essential gas for us because it has high significance in respiration process.Similarly,Ozone or O3 molecule also has  very high significance in our environment because it protects us from harmful  radiations.Ozone gas is highly toxic in nature if we inhale it.

Sun is responsible for the formation of ozone layer in our environment.This happens when sunlight fall on high altitude in our atmosphere then oxygen molecules start splitting into free atoms later these free atoms join each other to form molecule of ozone gas because these free atoms are very reactive in nature.

Ozone layer is found between the 15 kilometer to 60 kilometer from the surface of earth.This height of the earth is called upper atmosphere.

This ozone layer between this height protect us from harmful ultraviolet sun radiation.This radiation must be stop to enter the atmosphere because this kind of radiation has highly harmful effects on us.This radiation is not only harmful for us but it also affect plants and animals life in severe way.

These ultraviolet rays cause different kinds of skin cancer to us.They are also harmful for our eyes because it damages the retina of eye and cause cataract.These ultra rays also reduces our immunity after that body resistance to several diseases also get reduced.

Thus,this is the ozone layer in high altitude of earth which not only protect us from several diseases but also protect plant and animal life.

But new study on ozone says that layer is becoming thinner day by day because of the use of chemical chlorofluorocarbons in high amount.This chemical is responsible for the depletion of ozone layer in our atmosphere

How CFC or chlorofluorocarbon destroy ozone layer ?

This chemical is widely used in refrigerator,AC (air conditioners) to cool air as coolant.This chemical is also useful in different types of fire extinguishers and various sprays.By entering into our atmosphere CFC starts destroying ozone molecules by reacting with it.Low ozone molecules means thin ozone layer.

If we do not reduce our use of CFC in the atmosphere then the day will come when ultraviolet rays hit us directly and will cause diseases like cataract and cancer.
