Keeping your interests and needs above everything else showing no value for other's is being selfish whereas valuing their opinions and interests and understanding their feelings and pains instead of sacrificing theirs for your greedy achievements is truly selfless. 

One of the best illustrations to show that selfishness never wins, it ultimately destroys is the short story of a plane journey consisting of 4 persons a doctor, a lawyer, a student and a priest where in spite of the pilot's best efforts the plane lost its control and was about to crash in a few moments. The helpless pilot suddenly grabbed a parachute and bailed out after yelling to the passengers to better get off the plane before it crashes. Unfortunately there were only 3 parachutes left. The doctor and the lawyer being the most greedy ones took each for themselves and jumped off the plane stating they are the most qualified ones and cause of which others will need their help. But the priest being a selfless soul offered the remaining one parachute to the school boy and asked him to save himself as he is the promising future of the world. But the boy in turn said to the priest that the one of the greedy ones in their hurry took the boy's bag mistaking it to be a parachute. From this short story it's very clear that the greedy thoughts like “I just need to look my own needs and happiness and other's problems and pain wont bother me. ” won't do us any good but instead will ruin ourselves. 

Like nature love is clear and pure in it's original form, its we man beings making it filthy with our over thinking and greedy needs. The problem really arises when one approaches a situation, let it be any kind like in a friendship, partnership, love life or even a strangerly thing, with a selfish soul and cunning thoughts. Every living soul is as soft as a rose, once it start loosing its petals the beauty that captivates the mind is lost forever. One can either pluck it from its root and use it for his own pleasure and happiness or can enjoy its radiant beauty without ruining it. So it's all in your hands whether to kill the blossom with your selfish needs or to preserve the fragrance all long with your selfless love and care.
