Habit is often something that is associated with permanence. When we hear the word habit, the first thing that comes to our mind is something we do daily. So then, what is a temporary habit?
Temporary habits are those habits which do not require to be done daily to make a behavioural change. To put it more simply, we don't have to follow strict and consistent practices to incorporate a particular task into our routine.
This will open the pandora's box of doubts about the pros and cons of temporary habits. In today's blog, let us see the benefits of having temporary habits in our life.
New insights about values, likes and priorities. We all like some things over others. When we try to incorporate a habit into our routine, after a few days of doing the activity, we will be able to rethink whether or not we really want it in our life. This not only helps to understand our priorities but also to review our values and redefine them.
Give space for more experimentation. Temporary habits give way to experimenting more with different activities. Even though having a permanent habit is good, it comes with an opportunity cost. It is always good to experiment with more things. So when we take up a temporary habit, it will give us more space to try and do many things without wasting time.
Though brief helps to make behavioural sequence automatic. Habits are useful because they help us to reduce the use of our brainpower on small tasks and avoid excess decision-making. While persistent habits make this more effective, transient habit also serves the same purpose. For example, drinking a lot of water in summer is a habit for most of us. But do we drink the same amount of water in Monsoon or in winter? Many habits work only for a specific season in our life not for an entire lifetime. What are some seasonal habits you have in your life? Mention in the comment box.
Habits, in a wide range of ways, help us to be more productive and efficient. Maintaining a number of ultra-consistent habits may invoke pride in your abilities. If you are someone who believes in keeping habits, try temporary habits or habits that you can swap in and out to adjust your priorities. Habit streaks are often misleading and may lead to fragile habits. So instead of trying to make a habit permanent and failing, it is always good to keep temporary ones and build more behavioural sequences.
