How To Overcome Writer's Block
What is writer’s block?
Is it something to worry about?
How can I overcome it?
How long can writer’s block last?
What are the causes of writer’s block?
As writers, we all must have experienced at least one writer’s block. The term may be new to you but the feeling is common. According to Wikipedia, the definition of writer’s block is,
“Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author is unable to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown.”
Ah! now you know! Let me tell you my story as a writer and how I manage my writer’s block. I am no expert but these are some things I do to overcome my writer’s block.
- Self-examining
This may sound insane, but trust me, this is the best initial step you can take to both overcome your writer’s block as well as improve your writing skills. All you have to do is, sit back and think about your pros and cons. List down everything that comes into your mind. For example, I was good at writing quotes with eight or four lines rather than long poems or stories.
- Writing Prompts
Basically, when you are stuck with writer’s block the main thing you encounter is a lack of topics to write. Writing prompts, to an extent, helps you overcome this. GoSocial is an app available in Google Playstore which has a lot of writing prompts that might help you. I literally love this app.YourQuotes and Pinterest (search for writing prompts) also aid to kickstart your writing again.
- Try a new Genre
A change is always good. If you are someone who has a good hand at writing fantasy, try some science fiction or try something entirely opposite, like something non-fiction. There are more genres you can ever think of. If you are a poet, try writing a short story, it may either trigger your creative mind to make a beautiful story or makes your mind realise that you are good at poems.
- Read, Read and Read
When you lack an appetite to write feed your mind with books. Books are the best source of words. You never know which book might induce the spark which will guide you to be a good writer. So reading is always good to overcome writer’s block. Good books give you good times and good times fuel your imagination which will make you a good writer.
Writer’s block might come at any moment, it may be due to anything. If any of the above-mentioned tips didn’t work, grab a coffee (or tea), put on your headsets and watch a movie or a series. If this didn’t work try meditation, and calm your mind. Many a time lack of creativity is due to exhaustion, so relax your mind and body and just let it pass. ‘KEEP CALM AND KEEP WRITING’
