Mehul Choksi was born on 5 May 1959 in Bombay Choksi is the maternal uncle of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi. Choksi started his career in the gem and jewellery sector in 1975. He owns Gitanjali Group, which includes Gitanjali Gems.
In March 2018, a special PMLA court issued non-bailable arrest warrants (NBWs) against Choksi for criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and dishonesty including delivery of property, corruption and money laundering, he have allegedly scammed Rs 13,500 crore from PNB.
On 7 January 2018, Choksi left India to the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda and he applied for the citizenship in November 2017 under the country's Citizenship by Investment program. On 17 June, his lawyer informed the Bombay High Court that he left India for treatment and not to avoid prosecution in the case. Since then, CBI has been trying to extradite him back to India.
On 26 May, he was caught in a nearby Caribbean country Dominica by the local authorities. Some sources say that he was on a trip with his girlfriend and some say that he was trying to flee to Cuba but the lawyer of Choksi said that Choksi was kidnapped and tortured by Indian and Antiguan police and brought to Dominica as they cannot do anything to him since he have a citizenship in Antigua. Lawyer of Choksi denied the statement that he was trying to escape by saying that he has a stay in his favour due to his citizenship and his passport is in Antigua and if he had any plans of fleeing to Cuba he would obviously carry his passport along with him.
Antigua and Barbuda PM Gaston Browne said to the Dominican Government that the citizenship of Choksi will be revoked and Choksi should be sent to India and not returned to Antigua. Documents are being presented to the Dominican authorities to prove that Choksi is a fugitive and should be extradited directly to India.
The court has restrained Mehul Choksiβs extradition to any other country till the next hearing dated June 2, due to the matter of the alleged kidnapping, torture and illegal arrest of Mehul Choksi.
Indian authorities are trying there best to do everything to get back Mehul Choksi back to India so that he can be punished for all his frauds. Hopefully the Dominican High Court will give judgement in favour of extradition of Choksi to India.
