Petra is a historic and magnificent city in the south of Jordan in the Middle East. It is the most visited tourist destination in the country.

In 1985, it was named as the world heritage site by UNESCO. And also, today it is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. This city is more than 2000 years old and is famous for the construction carved in a type of rock called sandstone. It was made by the Nabataeans, an arabic ancestral community who colonized this part of the country in 312BC. They named it Petra. Petra also stood out for its remarkable hydraulic systems. The Nabataeans also made other constructions in the territory. The rock carving style of architecture made this city quite popular and is the reason for its popularity in today's world too.

Petra was annexed by the Roman empire in 63BC. Another important feature of this city's history is that over time, Petra faced two strong earthquakes with the second one being very destructive. After that many parts of the city were destroyed brutally. To this day, those who visit this city, can also get to see temples, tombs, houses and other monuments sculpted into rocks and scattered in a beautiful landscape. Although it is an incredibly old place, occupied by many civilisations over the time, the city fell into oblivion for a moment. In 1812, the city was explored by Johann Burckhardt, and thanks to him  Petra began to attract the worlds attention yet again. Visited by many historians, archeologists and historical enthusiasts, Petra's most popular monuments is Al Khazneh. It is a large 40 meter high facade, carved by the Romans which no one really knows why it was built there for. Some people believe that it was a kind of Mausoleum.

Another popular site is El Dier. With the Grandiose architecture, it has a very beautiful facade. To get there, one needs to climb a stair case of 800 steps. Obviously, there are other interesting sites to see here like the world Tombs such as palace tomb where the evidences of religious practices have been discovered. Also there is a amphitheatre made by the Romans for about 7,000 people.

The archeological sites of this beautiful city, Petra, became even more famous for being the setting for The New Adventures of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Nowadays  thousands of visitors visit this city of Petra and marvel at the phenomenal monuments carve in the rocks
