Apollo's one of the powers was his talent of music. But when it came to musical talent there was another person as a rival to apollo, his name was Pan.

Pan, the god of woods was always a god who was despised by his peers. But after he invented the syringe flute, he was respected for his musical talent. Pan used to roam around in woods with his new friend King Midas, who was known to turn anything he touched into gold. But it turned out as a curse and as it was removed by dionysus, Midas lived modestly in the forests. And then he met Pan and became great friends with him. Pan began to believe that he was the greatest musician ever as everyone praised him wherever he went. But there was a nymph in the audience who claimed that the god Apollo would be the greatest of all musicians.

Pan spoke up of challenging Apollo and Midas cautioned him the Apollo was the god of Music and it would not be wise to challenge him for a musical contest. Apollo heard of Pan's musical challenge and accepted it. 

Apollo said" So are you the one who claims that you can defeat the god of music".

“ the god of music, the god of the sun, the god of prophecy, you have many roles,but today i will relieve you of one.”.

“ You couldnt even beat my mortal son, Orpheus” roared apollo" let alone beat the great apollo."

Every creature gathered there to listen to the greatest musical contest ever. Pan began the concert with his flute. He was remarkable as always. His melody thrilled every ear. He finished his music and was heavily cheered that boosted his confidence even more. But Apollo was undeterred. He tuned his Lyre and began with his performance. The chords were perfect and elegant. The harmony was divine. The audience cheered and tears dripped out of emotion. Everyone pointed Apollo as the winner. Midas would have to give his verdict. He looked at pan, his friend who was dejected and said “ Today, Apollo moved everyone with his music but Pan's flute was nothing less but perfect. I declare Pan superior. ”

Even though Midas knew that Apollo had won the contest, he gave his friend a consolation vote. The god of music, Apollo came over to Midas and said" You seem to have interest in music, but i believe those ears of yours are not useful. I can fix that" Apollo used his powers to punish Midas and gave him Pig ears.
