The Real Atlantis: Of The Sand.

Have you ever thought if Atlantis is real or not?? Well, here is something similarly fascinating structure, which was once believed to be the real atlantis. But the twist here lies is that this atlantis has no water around but all there is, is sand.

It's been a lot of years since we got our first good look at the geological marvel known as the eye of the Sahara. Despite the fact that people have been walking right through it in the middle of Mauritania, at 50 kms across, it gives a wider view of one of the world's coolest geological feature. Best view to get of this marvel is from space.

It is so huge that the early NASA missions used it as a landmark for their missions. Looking at the concentric circles and uncanny symmetry, the scientists thought of it as an after effect of some enormous crater's impact. But it is not the result of a comet, asteroid or even any kind of volcano.  Most scientists believe that this is actually a deeply eroded geologic dome.

A.k.a The Richat structure

This dome, believed to be formed more than a hundred million years ago, when the lithosphere ( the crust and upper mantle of the Earth's surface) weakened. This kind of weakness resulted in the rising of the dome as magma swelled below the surface. Geologists named this an anticline. It basically is that the rocks are sticking up from the surroundings. This dome was almost perfectly circular and symmetrical anticline.

Over all these millions of years, the dome eroded and eroded away, by all the hydrothermal water in the area, another result of the magma lurking near the surface. Different kinds of rocks erodes at a different rate, so the sedimentary rocks layer eroded very eaily and formed what is the inner valley of the dome. Although the harder metamorphic rocks, which are more resistant to erosion remained. This left the oldest rocks exposed as cliffs seperated by valleys where the younger and softer rocks used to be, creating the eye of the Sahara's weird concentric circles.

So if you are ever in Mauritania, you can visit it. It is quite fascinating but still it is also kinda boring. πŸ˜…πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
