Ivar ragnarson, famously known as Ivar the Boneless, was one of the most famous war lords of the vikings era. His reputation and stories are evident in the old norse legends where he is said to be a divine warrior. The british sources of that time revered Ivar as a demon came from the depths of hell. It is believed that Ivar was the son of Ragnar Lothbrok, the famous viking warrior and his wife Aslaug.

The term boneless may tell us about his physical handicap. It is considered that Ivar had very brittle bones in his legs. and some also believed that Ivar was Impotent, not able to have children. Because of this disability of his, Ivar had to be carried on a stretcher by his guardians. He compensated the weakness of his body with great intellect and strategical mindset. He had three younger brothers who were his main and trusted companions, Bjorn Ironside  Hvitserk and Sigurd. They often raided together and were led by Ivar. He was a born leader and loyal.

As he heard the new of his fathers capture and execution by the King Aelle of Northumbria, he demanded to know everything that happened. Ragnar was thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes and his death fueled Ivar's anger and he started planning avenging his father and having his revenge against the saxons.

He made a plan and met with King Aelle formally. Aelle agreed to pay him for his fathers death as a sign of humiliation, he promised ivar  a size of his land large enough to cover the largest cowhide available. So ivar took the cow hide and cut it into thin strips and made it to a larger area intended. And because of this genius of his, he established a city named York, on this land. He made connections with other viking leaders and asked his brothers to join him in his revenge. The forces gathered were to be known as THE GREAT HEATHEN ARMY.

This army raided and conquest many lands against the anglo saxon kingdoms over 14 years. The northumbrian forces were finally defeated and king aelle was captured. Ivar showed his cruel amd ruthless nature while punishing the murderer of his father. Aelle was sacrificed in a gory ritual  The Blood Eagle. The victims ribcage was to be opened from his back and his lungs to be ripped out.

Ivar remained king of york after his revenge until he died of a sudden illness.
