Hi again. Welcome or welcome back my dear bloggers to my daily blogs. I hope you all are in good health and are having a blast of a day.
Todya we will be talking about La Sagrada Familia church. It is situated in the middle of Barcelona.
The astounding thing about this church is that it took way longer to construct than one can imagine. Its architect, Antoni Gaudi started the project in 1914 but unfortunately he died in 1926 and not even a quarter of the construction was completed. It was in 2010 that the construction was just midway finished. Now, it is estimated to complete in the year 2026, which would be the 100th year of Gaudi's demise. Interestingly, it would have taken 10 times longer than Great Pyramids, about 123 years more than the Taj Mahal of Agra, even 50 years more than the Great wall of china to be constructed.
Its origin….
Josep Bocabella wanted a church to be constructed in Spain similar to the ones in Italy. So the construction started in 1882 under architect Fancisco del Villar. He resigned a year into it and Antoni Gaudi took over the project. And he changed almost everything that was planned.
Geometry of the structure.
Gaudi designed this church in such a manner that any architect could understand the drawings and details so that they can continue the work. He even made some models of the glory facade for the future architects who will work on it. In fact, he was aware of the fact that the construction would never be completed in his lifetime, so he planned the construction in stages so that the architects can add their own style to his design.
Each facade has 4 towers, 12 towers in total, which represents the Apostles of Jesus Christ. Next to these, 6 taller towers are at the middle of the church, out of which 4 are dedicated to the Evangelists. These 4 towers surround one tall one in the center representing Jesus. The 6th tower is the shorter one. It is a more sturdy one and represents Virgin Mary. There will be a cross on top of the tower of jesus with other symbols in top of the other towers.
So that was all for this blog i hope you all liked it. This will be a new series where i will discuss about amazing architecture and designs. Hope you'll enjoy.
