The Taj Mahal, also known as the "Crown of the Palace," is /ˌtɑːdŒ məˈhɑːl, ˌtɑ˞Œ-/.[4][5][6] is a mausoleum made of ivory-white marble located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, on the Yamuna River's right bank. The fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658), ordered its construction in 1631 to house both his own mausoleum and the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, his adored wife. The mausoleum is the focal point of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex that also contains a guest house and a mosque. It is situated in formal gardens that are surrounded by a wall with crenellations on three sides.Although the mausoleum's construction was substantially finished in 1643, other project phases required a further ten years of work. It is thought that the Taj Mahal complex was finished in full in 1653, for a cost estimated to have been about ₹32 million at the time (about ₹35 billion in 2023).[7] Under the direction of a board of architects headed by Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the emperor's court architect, the construction project employed some 20,000 craftspeople. The Taj uses a variety of iconography to convey both divinity and the beauty of nature.

Originally, the structure was white. Pollution is causing it to turn yellow. The atmosphere's sulfur dioxide combines with water molecules to form sulfuric acid, which gradually erodes the building's exterior.
