We are really thankful of him and since Olympic Games are just around the corner ,,, Google is appreciating and honoured his work for our history by celebrating his 122nd birthday yesterdayβ¦.And the name of this person is SIR LUDWIG GUTTMANN.
I didn't knew about him until yesterdayβ¦.So I thought why not share this useful information with you guys ,, because maybe like me there are many people who don't know about himβ¦ Maybe in this way we get to know him and cherish his works and achievements..ππβΊβΊ
Ludwig Guttmann or βPoppaβ was born in a place called Tost( now Toszek in Poland) on July 3 1899. He went to become a renowned Neurologist whose research on spinal cord injuries and neurosurgical work made him one of the most famous neurologists in Germany.
He was Jewish in Germany, and at the time of Nazism in 1933, he was not permitted to practice medicine in the country. With his own life at risk, he managed to escape the country and found solace in England in 1939.
There, he did more research workπ¨βπ¬π¨βπ¬, in a condition called PARAPLEGIA. In 1948, he organized an archery contest for wheelchair π¨βπ¦½π©βπ¦½users that became the invention of what is now known as the βPARALYMPIC GAMESβ. Back then, it was known as the βStoke Mandeville Gamesβ which was named after the hospital he was working in.
He declared the first-ever international Paralympic Games open in 1960. His work can never be forgotten in medical field.
He founded Medical Society for Paraplegia and the British Sports Association for the Disabled in 1961.He was Knighted by the Queen in 1966.
