Doctors Don't Hurt, Please Understand

How many times in life have you blamed the doctor for charging more or not treating you well or adding up to your illness? If you have even once, I'm here to clarify a few things to you.

Before I proceed, let me tell you my reason for writing this blog. There have been lot of cases of violence against doctors before and during the covid times. I, being a doctor, felt the need to try my bit in bringing into awareness what is happening with my fraternity. People are beating up doctors and nurses for anything that goes wrong in the hospital. Be it the lack of supplies or the seriousness of the disease. How fair do you think it is?

There are cases of doctors being beaten up for lack of oxygen, death of a morbidly serious patient, excess charge for the services and the list goes on. I'll clarify you how much a doctor and a nurse can control in any patient's care.

Firstly, doctors don't breathe out oxygen into the oxygen cylinders and neither they suck it all up. Doctors have no hand over how much oxygen a hospital is getting or how much more a hospital might need. This is the case with any medicine, supply or facility in a hospital, not just oxygen. If there's no ventilator available in a hospital, it's just that the hospital is not well equipped. Doctor isn't at fault.

Another important thing is doctors don't deliberately kill. We don't become doctors to kill someone. Please understand. Even if a person is critically ill, we still try our best to save him. We don't want anyone to die. But sometimes, things get worse and we can't help it. Doctors cannot stop death. We just help you heal.

Another thing is people keep questioning the ability of doctors. You have total right to shift your person from one hospital to another if you feel that a doctor isn't treating them well. Just don't make a ruckus hitting the doctor or the nurse.

The most important thing, because it is heard by a doctor every single dayโ€ฆ please understand 'doctors don't loot you'. Doctors have a consultation fee because of the service we provide. We have worked hard, studied hard to be able to see you and know what the problem is with your health. And I don't think there's anything wrong in working for money. Would you work for free? C'mon.! That's basic sense. If you speak of service, ofcourse doctors do service. But we can't just keep doing free service for every individual. Right?!

And all the hospital charges that you pay goes to the hospital. Not the doctor. Doctors have a fixed salary. We don't get bonuses for making a patient stay more number of days. We always try to make you well and send you home early.

All this to explain you that no doctors aren't bad. We don't loot you and abandon you. We are already in a lot of stress over the health of our patients. Please don't hit us and make us feel that we aren't appreciated. Please stop hitting anyone who's helping you. Please spread the word.

Next time you go and see a doctor, please be generous. We are humans too. And next time you catch someone blaming doctors, clarify if they are even right about it.
