"What Independence Means To All Of You?"

Yesterday, on 15th August we celebrated 75th Independence Day. On this day, we got Independence from Britishers. But today I won't talk about how we got Independence from them and all the history related to it. Rather I would like to talk about something different, but about Independence only. Alright let's not confuse you anymore, and start with the blog. Slowly and steadily as you will read further you will understand what I meant by the above mentioned statement.

First of all, I want to ask you all a question. So tell me ‘what independence means to you all’. If you will ponder on this, most of you will know something or the other you might want independence from. But for now I will tell you what Independence means to me.

Once in a lifetime, we girls are restricted to something or the other, including me. For example, like some other girls, I am also restricted to night-outs. Even though India has got independence from Britishers, women have not yet got Independence from stereotypes they are asked to follow. It's been many years now that they are chained in the restrictions that are prescribed by society. Indians might have got Independence years ago, but women still haven't got independence from typical society cultures. We still haven't got independence from body-shaming we have to face. We still haven't got independence for roaming freely on nights, just like men do. Forget about nights, we are not safe even in day-time.

As everything can have different meaning for everyone, so just like that Independence to me means freedom from all these restrictions, stereotypes, and women-specific cultures. Like all Indians felt suffocated during the British Rule, i.e. the time they spent in slavery, just like that I feel suffocated in this restricted world, where only girls like me from family like mine are stopped from doing whatever we want, and are asked to follow what our families want.

I am not urging any of you here to think like me, but all I am doing is expressing my thoughts. I believe that just like every Indian fought for the Independence, we women also need to unite to fight for our Independence. I am not against my family as I also understand their stress regarding our safety. But does that mean we should not enjoy our life? I don't think that's fair enough. If they are so worried about our safety, then they should think of teaching boys what's right as in how they should behave with girls. Then, this can be considered as a right solution for their stress, and for us who want Independence from all this thing.

I hope you all will think about this, and the question that I asked. And will give your part in making India a better place for everyone.

Thank you.

One subject that haunts me, shakes me and wrecks me! 'My brother and I have the same parents. But mine's stricter'. I'm sure most girls can relate to this sentence just like I did! I just hope our kids will have it different.
