North Korean leader Kim Jong's recent label on K Pop of that of ‘vicious cancer' might look as something that came out as a concern for the rising influences of South Korea on the North But leaving the strained relations of the two Korean lands aside, let's look at the fallacies of these Korean music bands hailed as 'the K pop'!!
I begin with a disclaimer- music is SUBJECTIVE.
These are my own opinions which I built after seeing how fake and misleading this genre is.
I in no way mean to change your perspective of the KPOP world.
My own reasons of disliking this genre include-
K Pop songs are mostly rejected western music produce . You would say thats because you don't understand the lyrics!! Yes i dont but i counter this argument with the fact that i listen to J-Pop and Latin music too and I find these much more meaningful. Also when I google the Korean lyrics I find no solid theme most of the times.. There are just repeating the same words over n over against a catchy background beat and some very fantastic dance moves to hide the meaningless lyrics..
Second, the korean industry is entirely based on looking good the whole time. The celebrities are portrayed as the 'most beautiful beings' among us all. This goes in line with their colorful song videos and catchy dance numbers. Most of the idols are under pressure to maintain a certain weight and even go under the knife for amending their features!!
Imagine Metallica and JayZ in Korean bands..... No one would have liked them.. Absurd?
KPOP needs to normalise the fact that a musician can be ugly, homeless or a drug addict too. After all music is supposed to give us quality music and not just repetitive song numbers meant for just sex appeal..!
( I saw a Kpop music video on YouTube where the camera just zooms over to the thigh of a singer.. Talk about objectifying! )
Then comes the Kpop fandom - also known as Sasaeng- who drool over the dancing of a music band.. Duh! They are a small group of fans but so loud that it pisses the rest of us to the roof..
They are super obsessed fans and a simple google search will show you to what extent they have gone to make their idols life miserable!
The bottom line is if you really stan KPOP raise your voices for you heroes and get them their basic human rights which most of them are denied of in their contracts.. Many refer the contacts as ‘slave contracts’.. Thats a whole lot they go through to put up colorful and appealing numbers for you .
We all need to look above the shallow beauty standards set by these idols and see the dark side of this genre. Again music is subjective and you may have many reasons to adore these cute singers but the dark side still lingers on.
Peace and love.
