Hello everyone! In this blog is about jeans..
A recent study done by the University of California showed that the average price of jeans have increased 10-fold in the last 30 years alone. As if that isn't enough, the study also shows that the cost of cotton production actually doubled from 1996 to 2006. So what caused these major increases in prices?
Fabric composition:
Denim fabric is constructed using a cotton/polyester blend. These materials allow denim to stretch a lot while retaining its shape due to the elastic nature of the polyester fibers. Denim is generally made from about 80% cotton and 20% polyester. The higher the percentage of polyester, the softer and lighter the denim becomes. Lightweight denims are often produced using 100% cotton and polyester blends. Because of the popularity of denim, manufacturers have been able to make low-quality,cheap products that are still sold at high prices.
Labor cost:
Because they are mass-produced, denim manufacturing requires low labor costs. You'll find that most workers making jeans only need to stitch two fabrics together (cotton and polyester). In addition, sewing machines and cutting equipment do not require much maintenance. Low wages and little training result in denim employees having low productivity and knowledge.
Brand loyalty:
People's tendency to shop at stores where they know they can get quality goods at affordable prices means that many people will continue to purchase brands they already trust. Brands with loyal customers tend to spend less time looking for ways to increase profits rather than trying to improve customer service and attract new customers.
Lack of innovation:
The industry does not invest enough money into developing new styles or innovations. Most companies simply buy off designs from designers who already understand how to create unique styles and use them to their advantage.
Cuts and tears make repairs difficult:
Jeans aren't just soft; they're also designed to stretch and accommodate changes in dimension along with the wearer's body. When you get a cut, rip, or snag, you may not be able to repair it yourself. You'd either have to replace the entire garment or pay someone else to do it. Not only does this add to the cost, but it's also inconvenient.
Because recycling is hard:
Most denims are made from a polyester fiber that is extremely difficult to recycle. If they could be recycled easily, then companies wouldn't need to reuse as much raw materials to produce new ones. Denim is a nonorganic product; therefore, it cannot be composted.
