The word comes from the Old English word meaning “height.” In some countries, mountains are called hills, but in other places they are named after their chief features: peaks, summits, etc. Today, many people use the term “mountain” to refer to any sizable hill or plateau, regardless of whether there is evidence of human habitation or not.

Mountains - a beautiful natural monument which has become an object of tourism, recreation and conservation. Mountains protect water resources from evaporation and precipitation. They help in stabilizing the climate through their effect on wind currents and atmospheric temperatures. Mountains serve as barriers against flooding, landslides and erosion. Mountains influence the weather patterns, they can even change them. Mountains affect  the air pressure, and thereby create weather conditions suitable for life in different parts of the globe: tropical forests, temperate forests, tundra regions and deserts. The Alps have been a playground for mountaineers since the beginning of the 20th century.
