Hygiene and sanitation

The word ‘Hygiene’ has been drived from Greek word ‘Hygienos’ which means healthful. However, ‘Hyiene’ is also termed as ‘Hygia’ in Greek, which means the goddess of health. In the modern times, it means" the art of living". Hygiene is the science which seeks to preserve and improve the health of the individual and of the community as a whole.

# PERSONAL HYGIENE 

It is true that a healthy mind lives in healthy body. It means that for proper and systematic working of the body it is essential to have proper hygiene, this type of hygiene is called personal hygiene. Good habits serve as an instrument for the promotion of health and long life. Similarly for proper and systematic functioning of the different organs of the body, it is essential to have proper hygiene. Personal hygiene involves all aspects of the health of an individual. 

Personal hygiene help in: 

  1. Developing healthy habits and attitudes 
  2. Developing attractive personality 
  3. Developing emotional stability 
  4. Maintaining healthy atmosphere 
Social hygiene

# SOCIAL HYGIENE 

The practice of measures designed to protect and improved the family as a social institutions. 

Specifically: The practice of measures aiming at the elimination of veneraeal disease and prostitution

Some of the method of social hygiene includes: 

  1. Use of handkerchief or cloth during sneezing in the public. 
  2. Taking bath and brushing the teeth everyday. If a person does not take bath or brush teeth, there will be a lot microbe a great threat to the people around. 
  3. Do not spit on the roads or public. 
  4. Use proper sanitation after contact with pets. 

# CLEANLINESS 

Personal cleanliness is one of the main ingredient of good health. It is a preventive measure against disease. So one must how to keep himself clean and healthy. The habit of personal cleanliness must be cultivated in children so that they can keep themselves healthy. Personal cleanliness includes: cleanliness of teeth, ears, nose, nails, skin, bowels habit, clothes etc. 

  • TEETH  

Bad teeth results in developing various disease such as pyorrhoea and also causes a danger to digestive system whereas healthy teeth contribute to a pleasing appearance and help in chewing and digestion of food. Diseased teeth and gums not only cause pain and discomfort in the oral cavity but also can lead to serious complications like heart disease, joint pain, abdominal pain and even cancer of mouth. 

We must follow such rules regarding healthy teeth: 

  1. Brush teeth daily after every meal especially after dinner. 
  2. Brush teeth from up to downward direction and vice-versa. 
  3. Consult dental surgeon regularly. With proper and professional care one can keep nature denture throughout life.   
  • EARS 

Hygiene of ears is very essential. Ear is a sense organ because we hear things through ear, good hearing keeps one in active touch with people and events. Don't neglect cough or cold. Learn the early signs of deafness. Treat the illness early. If there is discharge or pain in ear, a doctor must be consulted. 

  • EYES 

Eyes are the most important and valuable organs of the body. Every care is essential to retain their sight and keep them healthy. Poor nutrition may cause vision distribution and inflammation conditions of eyes and lids, so rich diet is to be taken for better sight. 

Learn the following points to protect eyes: 

  1. Wash eyes with fresh and clean water. 
  2. Protect the eyes from dust, smoke and bright sunlight and irritating vapours. 
  3. Do not neglect eye strain, consult doctor immediately. 
  • SKIN

In order to avoid the dangerous effect of polluted atmosphere around us, one has to clean or wash the skin daily. If dirt is allowed to remain over the skin for a long time, it may cause skin disease. By taking bath the body become fresh and remain active. During winter sun-bath may also be practised. Exposure of the body in the sun during winter provides vitamin D and K and improves vitality of the human body, which develops resistance against disease. One must avoid over exposure of skin or face to hot weather.
