Yak is found especially in the desert plateau, Tibet, Nepal and some northern areas of India at an altitude of 8-10 thousand feet. It is black, brown, white, speckled.

In winter, wild yak can survive in temperatures as low as -40 degrees. A wild yak reaches its full size between 6 and 8 years old. The Sherpa species of Nepal call the male yak 'Yak' and the female yak as 'Nak' and 'Dari'. The main function of the fur on its body is to prevent body heat from escaping and to protect the body from low external temperature. The main predators of yaks are Tibetan wolves. Wild yaks can live up to 20 years. Domesticated yaks can live a few more years than wild yaks.
