We are profoundly ignorant about the origin of human language.According to a famous linguist ,Otto Jesperson human language originated when human beings were actually enjoying themselves.Charles Darwin says that early humans had already developed musical ability prior to language.These are only speculations .We have no direct evidence relating to the early speech of the early humans .One thing is certain that spoken language developed long before the written language ,we can see a few theories about the origin of language.

The Divine Source.

Several religious try to answer question about the origin of language.According to Bible ,God created Adam and whatever Adam spoke become language.A Hindu tradition says that language came from goddess Saraswathi.Many people including King James4 of Scotland ,believed that Herbew was the language of the garden of Eden .This also could not be proved.

In an attempt to discover the original divine language ,a few experiments were conducted (by an Egyptian pharaoh psammeticus)If infants were allowed to grow up without hearing any language,they would spontaneously use the god-given language,but the experiments failed.Children living without access to human speech in their early years grew up without any language.

The Natural sound source .

Here there were three theory.The Natural Sound source suggest that primitive words could have been imitations of the natural sounds which early men and women heard around them .For ex.When a flying bird made a cuckoo sound it came to refer to that bird .Many language in the world have echoing sense like splash ,bang ,buzz and hiss .This theory is called Bow-Wow Theory of language orgin.

The original sounds came from cries of emotion such as pain ,anger and joy .Many interjections in a language like ah,ouch may be good example .The expressive noises people make in emotional realtion contain sounds that are not otherwise used in their language .This theory is called Pooh-Pooh Theory .But this theory does not explain the origin of language.

The sounds of a person involved in physical effort could be the source of language .The early humans were engaged in group activities like lifting or carrying things,but it does not answer the question regarding the origin of the sound produced .This theory is called Yo-Heave -Ho Theory.This theory places the development of human language in some social context.

The Oral -Gesture Source .

The Oral Gesture theory involves a link between physical and orally produced sounds that means non verbal communication used by modern human beings even with developed linguistic skills .This gestures later identified as speech.
