India Running Out Of Coal; Impending Doom And Darkness In The Near Future

Woke up to the news of our country running out of coal and of extensive hours of power outage. India is sweating over longest power cuts in 6 years during extreme heat. The capital city recorded hottest April in the last 12 years.

Warnings of fire risks has been issued as the country is heating up too much too soon.

Authorities in worst hit areas are juggling long hours of power outage and growing pressure on health services.

Advisories has been issued to hospitals to set up special wards for heat stroke and other health concerns in relation to rise in temperature, besides dehydration.

Industrial activities are being disrupted to manage surging power demands leading to a hit in economy which was just taking baby strides after the Corona downturn. Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh had restricted industrial activity this month as household air conditioning demand peaked.

The leap in power demand has left India scrambling for coal, the dominant fuel used in electricity generation in the country.

India's weather office has warned of hotter weather in the coming days.

A shortage of trains to transport coal is exacerbating a fuel supply crisis. India's power secretary said this week that train availability was 6% lower than required.

Electricity supply fell short of demand by 1.88 billion units during the first 27 days of April, the worst monthly shortfall in over six years.

This power outage is playing a havoc role impacting all economic activities like production in engineering sector, medical services in the hospitals, etc.

After going through all these details of today, as scary as it might sound is real and close enough. The warning of decades ago, like a battlecry, is nearing on us and is blaring into our ears. How long are we going to turn a deaf ear to these environmental issues? As long as we have enough water in our taps, food on our plates and clean enough air to breathe, we wouldn't trouble ourselves with thoughts or actions.

There is much we can do as an individual; as a society and a nation, even more. It is high time we take action.

The climate change resulted from the everyday smoke we dumped into the air we breathe and the chemicals released by electronics we invented for our comfort. And the heat has resulted in our even more heavier dependence on these nature- killing inventions. It is a vicious cycle that won't be stopped until we take action or it takes us.

Earth is our only home and our pride. Can we not do the bare minimum to embrace the planet that embraced us?
