Search engines, like Google or Yahoo, are there as a service to help people find what they are looking for online. When anyone visits a search engine they’ll usually type in a word or a few words – otherwise known as ‘keywords’ or a ‘keyphrase’.

The search engine does its job and matches these words with the sites on the internet, bringing a list of what they hope are very targeted results – answering whatever the user was searching for.

The secret to earning money online is to get visitors to your site, and it’s agreed across the board that the best FREE way of doing this is to appear in search engine results for searches relevant to your site. But search engines will only know what your site is about through the use of, you guessed it – keywords!

The Importance of Keyword Research

Keyword research simply means finding the best keywords for your site to target. Not only will these keywords be related closely to the content of your search, but ideally they will have a few thousand people searching for them each month. Luckily search engines like Google have a few tools that you can use to see how many people are searching for a given topic.

Where can these keywords be used?

You can include them in your website content,
They can be used in blog post titles, and website titles,
They can be used in article marketing campaign,
They can be used when you build backlinks back to your site,
They can even be used to understand the mindset of your customers.

The very best keyword research won’t stop there, though.

Unfortunately, with so many competing websites in just about every topic online, you need to search for a while to come up with those keywords you know you can have success with. This means looking at the other sites using these keywords, and determining whether you can beat them for that top search engine spot.

You might not think it’s important to get high up in the search engine results, but recent research has shown that over 50% of all searchers click the first link that comes up in Google results! If you’re at number 2 or 3, you’ll still get a good chunk of clicks. But if you’re at number 53, don’t expect too much.

There is no definitive guide as to what the best keyword research strategy really is. However, it unfortunately takes a degree of experience to recognise those words and phrases that could make you a good amount of money, rather than the ones that just won’t go anywhere.
