With the ever-present issue of food waste, Ramadan this year should be a little different.
Food waste is undoubtedly the most important issue during Ramadan, and frankly throughout the year. Honoring your guests is highly valued in Arab culture, particularly in Saudi Arabia. The majority of us believe that a wide spread is the best way to go. It is regarded as a sign of generosity by us. However, generosity has its limits when it crosses the line into israf (over indulgence). Khiyrat, on the other hand, isn't satisfied with the current quo.
Khiyrat is a tiny non-profit dedicated to reducing food waste. They are well known for collecting and distributing leftovers from individuals, restaurants, hotels, and private parties to those in need.
Their strategy can be broken down into three stages:
Educate
Khiyrat visits schools throughout the city to educate students about food waste as part of their activities. They show them how to save money in the most efficient way possible. They hope that by doing so, the future generation of consumers would be more aware of their choices.
Reuse
Who are you going to call if there is food available at the end of your event? Khiyrat!
Khiyrat dispatches a car to collect extra food after receiving a request. After that, the leftovers are separated and packed into little containers. The containers are subsequently distributed to needy households or to charity refrigerators in neighbourhoods identified by Khiyrat's detailed study.
Recycle
Khiyrat does not always get edible food. Scraps and leftovers, on the other hand, are not thrown away. What others see as rubbish, Khiyrat sees as fuel. They compost the scraps and transform them into fertiliser. Natural-based fertilisers are not widely available in the Kingdom, which Khiyrat hopes to capitalise on. The money raised from the sale of this fertiliser will be used to help Khiyrat continue to provide services in the future.
Suggestions for how you can express your support include:
Conserve!
The next time you throw a party with an abundance of food, give them a call.
Distribute leftovers in lesser quantities to coworkers or those in need.
Keep in mind that it will need a team effort from everyone in the family.
The second day, leftovers are just as tasty.
