Today's blog is about history and invention of pen…Ar you interested to know about this?🤔..lets start..👇
The creation of pen is basis of our civilization .Pen it is very important because we could write and communicate information.
"A pen is the tongue of the mind"
Do you agree the above quote .Without this our ancestors could not communicate with us .As they wrote some information we read that ,here we could know their lifestyle by it ,there things and many…i know that at that time they don't have pens but others which they used as pens .Isn't it?the sculptures ,ink pens,on some leaves by any of these they tried to say the history..and the life style.
Have you ever thought about this that how we went from using a quill pen to very common ball point pens..?So let's know the brief history of pens✒️ …
At that time the need of pen developed as humans discovered papyrus . To write one papyrus the Egyptians created the reed pen . They used hollow tubular marsh grass ,bamboo as body of pen . One end of the tube was sharp end into shape of pens nib and tube filled with writing fluid this pen would be squeezed to allow ink to flow out .
After using this reed pens for centuries , the quill pen was created in Seville ,Spain . This pens are made from bird feathers like swans ,turkeys ,geese .First the feathers are dried to remove oil , if presents .the end of it was cut to sharp it , to make tip of pen. This was used by dipping feathers in ink . This pens had to be sharpened with knife always . Before creating this pens writing used to be in capital letters only but after this pens ..decorative and small letters were developed as this pens are smooth enough .
After nearly using quill pens for 12 centuries quills are replaced when John Mitchell from Birmingham started developing machine made steel point pens . This pens worked same as quills but cheaper and sturdier . At the same time it was said to be egyptians also developed metal pens but not became famous .
As centuries going writing became smoother and faster and also important too . So as always dipping in ink and writing lead to frustration. At this time it lead to invention of fountain pen .As we know the famous sayings - “Neccessity is the mother of invention ”and “Frustration is the grandmother of invention” - Kevin shah ..😅😄(it is right)
This pen was patented by Petrache Poenaru , a Roman inventor in 1827 . This pen had an ink barrel and so there is no need to dip in ink but this design was not perfect it had flaws in flow of ink .
In 1884 Lewis Edson Waterman designed the 3 channel ink feed fountain pen . It had smooth flow of ink . However this pen undergone many inventions throughout that century.
Although American inventor John J.Loud patented the earliest design for a ball point pen in 1888 but he could not design perfect flow of ink . Decades later Laszlo Biro , Argentina started working on designs for ball point pen he decided to use quick dry ink and introduce a small metal ball that rotated a tip of pen this managed to keep ink from drying . In 1943 Laszlo and his brother patented this new design , these pens known as Biromes or Biropens . Then in 1945 , Marcel Bich , his company sold over 100 billion ball point pens worldwide .
This ball point pens was at turning point in the evolution of pens . It was highly durable , Convenient and also could write on several surfaces like wood card board etc… Today as technology developing pens are being replaced by smartphones , laptops etc gadgets and use of pens slowly declining ..!
So friends ,this is the history of the pen and it's evolution .This is how after many inventions and changes we are now using ball pens..interesting right!!
