Mrs. Dursley had an enjoyable, ordinary day. Over dinner, she filled him in on Mrs. Next Door's daughter's issues as well as the new term Dudley had picked up ("Won't!"). Mr. Dursley attempted to appear normal.

After Dudley had gone to sleep, he quickly rushed into the living room to see the final broadcast on the evening news:

And lastly, owls across the country have been acting in a rather unique way today, according to bird observers worldwide.

Since morning, hundreds of reports of owls flying in all directions have been made, despite the fact that these birds hardly never come out during the day to hunt.

Why the owls' sleeping habits have abruptly shifted is a mystery to experts.

Most mysterious, the newscaster permitted himself a grin. Jim McGuffin will now take over with the weather.
Will there be any more owl showers tonight, Jim?

The weatherman replied, "Well, Ted, I don't sure about that, but not just the owls have been acting strangely today.

It has been reported by viewers from as far away as Kent, Yorkshire, and Dundee that they have experienced a torrent of shooting stars rather than the rain I predicted for yesterday. It's only next week, guys, so perhaps people have started celebrating Bonfire Night early. But tonight will be a wet night, I guarantee it.

Mr. Dursley was immobile as he sat in his chair. 

Shooting stars in Britain as a whole?
Owls flying in the daytime? Cloaked figures of mystery everywhere? Additionally, there was a whisper concerning the Potters.

Two cups of tea were carried into the living room by Mrs. Dursley. It was awful.

He would have to address her in some way. He anxiously cleared his throat. "Er -- Petunia, dear -- you haven't heard from your sister lately, have you?"

Mrs. Dursley was astonished and irate, as he had anticipated. They did after all regularly pretend she didn't have a sister. "No," she firmly said. "Why?"

Mr. Dursley said, "Funny stuff on the news." "Owls... shooting stars... and there were a lot of funny-looking people in town today..."

Mrs. Dursley instantly asked, "So?"

"Well, I just thought... maybe... it was something to do with... you know... her crowd."

Mrs. Dursley pursed her lips as she sipped her tea. Mr. Dursley was unsure of how brave he should be in telling her that he had heard of "Potter."

He came to the conclusion that he wouldn't dare. As casually as he could, he replied, "Their son -- he'd be about Dudley's age now, wouldn't he?"
