Lets say it’s Jan 2020 and you are eligible for promotion for Jan 2021.
Let your manager know you are looking ahead for promotion. Mention ” I’m looking ahead for NextRole for 2021″
Mention your work, the impact you had on business, any extra activities that you were involved arranged by organization for social good. Go on saying, I’d like to get more responsibilities to be ready for next role…
My personal experience :
Me:Hello, wanted to discuss my goals for this year. I'm looking for responsibilities for next role, so that I'd be ready. As it's been X years and I'm eligible for Y role.
Manager: I'll assign you goals once I finalize my roles for this year. So far make sure you do what you are asked making sure you are on the top of everything
Me: Based on my previous work, could you highlight where I can improve.
Manager: I think you can focus more on X task and improve yourself.
Me: Alright thanks.
Now, there are few things that I noticed here - My goals were never set. There were less frequent catch ups in the next couple of months.
Do not panic if that's the case. Just make sure you log every little task that you work on, make sure you get opportunity to have impact on business, participate in social events arranged by organization, (example, work with NGOs, make sure you contribute to society), be active in arranging team events.
Basically, work smart, be involved with the team, I'm sure everyone org has a portal where we get feedback from peers. Provide feedback, get good feedback from everyone you have worked with.
So how did I manage all this, And yes I proved myself that I'm eligible for next role.
