When we think of smart animals, dolphins, chimpanzees, and elephants usually come to mind.

But let’s not forget the clever fox!

These fascinating creatures have intrigued humans for centuries with their cunning behavior and adaptability.

So, what exactly makes foxes so smart?

Firstly, foxes display impressive problem-solving abilities. They are incredibly resourceful when it comes to finding food and shelter. Urban foxes, for example, have adapted to city life by learning to scavenge in human habitats, open bins, and even navigate traffic. Their capacity to thrive in diverse environments and utilize available resources showcases their intelligence.

Their hunting skills further highlight their cleverness. Foxes employ sophisticated techniques to catch their prey, such as the "mouse pounce." By using their acute hearing, they can locate prey hidden under snow or ground and then leap high into the air to land precisely on their target. This technique requires accurate calculation and timing, reflecting their advanced hunting strategies.

Socially, foxes exhibit complex behavior. While they are primarily solitary, they form family units and communicate using a variety of vocalizations and body language. Their social interactions include a range of expressions like barks, screams, and even a type of laughter. These sounds facilitate communication with their kits and other foxes, indicating a high level of social intelligence.

Playfulness is another indicator of their intellect. Foxes engage in playful behavior, which is often associated with intelligence in animals. Play allows them to develop hunting skills, learn social cues, and explore their environment. Young foxes, known as kits, partake in play fighting and chasing, honing their reflexes and coordination.

Memory also plays a crucial role in demonstrating fox intelligence. Foxes possess excellent spatial memory, enabling them to remember the locations of food caches. They store excess food and can retrieve it weeks later, even if it's been covered by snow or debris. This ability to remember and access stored food is vital for their survival, particularly in harsh conditions.

Moreover, foxes exhibit a level of cunning and deception. Observations have shown foxes pretending to bury food to mislead other animals. By making fake burial motions, they trick competitors into thinking they have hidden food elsewhere, protecting their actual stash.

Foxes are among the world's smartest animals, according to their problem-solving abilities, hunting techniques, social behaviours, playfulness, memory, and cunning nature. Their intellect is not only interesting, but also critical to their survival in a range of situations.

In my childhood there were jackals in our backyard. They used to hoot at the night. There number dwindled over the year.
