Most transit ties between India and Pakistan were cut off after 1947. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948 also separated the state of Jammu and Kashmir between the two enemies, resulting in the closure of transportation connectivity in the region. During the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971, the line of control and the international boundary in the split regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab served as important battlegrounds. The railroad connecting the Indian city of Jaipur to the Pakistani city of Karachi over the Thar Desert has been wrecked.

In 1977, both countries launched the Samjhauta Express, which connects the Indian city of Attari with the Pakistani city of Lahore. Since the successful debut of the Delhi-Lahore Bus in 1999, both nations have pushed to build various bus and rail routes linking cities across the borders in the Punjab area, Sindh, Rajasthan, and the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir across the Line.

Shimla Agreement of 1972, and in an effort to reestablish peaceful relations following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, both countries created the Samjhauta Express, which connects the Pakistani city of Lahore to the Indian village of Attari, near Amritsar. The Thar Express was launched to connect Karachi, Pakistan, with Jodhpur, India, via the Khokhrapar and Munabao stations.Plans and discussions are underway to build a rail connection between the Pakistani city of Sialkot and the Indian city of Jammu.
