This summer I didnt have that craving for mangoes like every year and I was not eating them at all.But one day my mother forced me to eat them and she said that my grandfather used to say we should eat all seasonal fruits and vegetables so I decided to learn more about them and here it is,the importance and perks of eating seasonal fruits.
1.Natural ripening
If it is a seasonal fruit or vegetable it will ripen naturally in its season and gives a better taste.They are perfectly ripened and their flavour is at the level best.
2.Supports body requirements
If a fruit or vegetable has a particular season of ripening then this is because they play a crucial role in fulfilling our body requirements in that season.Our body undergoes many physiological changes in different seasons.We may observe changes in our diet and the amount of water we drink.Therefore it becomes important for us to consume those fruits and vegetables.For example in winter season we have a huge variety of citrus fruits which help us fight cold and cough.The vegetables of winter season are great for making hot soups to keep us warm.And in summer stone fruits like mango provide us with carotenoids which protect us from sun.Also in summer we have great variety of salad vegetables and watery fruits and vegetables like cucumber which keep us hydrated and compensate our water loss caused due to heat.
3.High nutritional value
Fruits and vegetables which are naturally ripened in their particular season have highest nutritional value,also the content of antioxidants and phytonutrients are more.And because they are sold in one season there is no issue of storage(storages causes degradation of nutritional value and also the freshness is lost).
4.They are cheaper
As there is no cost for storage and transportation they are sold at cheaper prices but in this case mango is an exception.
5.They are healthy
No use of harmful chemicals and artificial ripeners makes these fruits and vegetables very healthy for us.
6.Environment friendly
If seasonal fruits and vegetables are eaten in their particular season the this reduces the need for producing them out of the season which harms environment.Use of chemicals is not good for the soil as well which may be used for the out of season produce of the seasonal fruits and vegetables.
