"Green Banking" An Important Step Towards Green Economy.

Today, sustainable development, and environmental preservation are the top priority. Thus the main focus is to implement the 3 R's viz. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Many kinds of research have pointed that an increase in carbon emissions can be the reason for all-natural disasters. Thanks to locking down the most important ozone layer which protects us from the UV rays have been recovered. but still, it is necessary to prevent it. Many natural disasters have taken place in 2020. Locust attack, cyclone, volcano, floods, and whatnot. It is very important to preserve the environment or else there will be more such disasters in the coming future.

All the world institutions are concerned about the impact of depletion of the environment. And are taking steps to prevent it. Green banking was usually started in back 1996. It studies various strategies adopted by banks for sustainable development. 

Green banking promotes environmental-friendly practices and reduces carbon footprints from banking activities. It's main motive is to protect and preserve the environment. Green banking is comparatively a new development in this financial world. It is a part of the green economy. The six strategic pillars of the green economy are as follows -

  1. Climate change.
  2. Resource-saving and management.
  3. Circular economy.
  4. Environmental protection.
  5. Ecosystem protection and recovery.
  6. Water conservation and natural disaster prevention.

"Green Banking is an important step towards the green economy."

Indian banks can adopt green banking in large numbers as a business model for sustainability banking. Day to day business banks heavily contribute towards carbon emission in terms of the use of paper, electricity, electronic equipment, stationery, etc. Banks hit the environment indirectly by financing intermediaries that have an impact on the environment. Many Indian banks realize the importance. Go Green Initiative is an organization started by ICICI bank is to make a healthy environment in the organization. IDBI Bank, SBI, and many other banks support environmental preservation. Banks started green banking products which are green cards, green mortgages, green car loans, green home equity loans, etc.

Not only banks but common people should also get involve or promote green banking. How one can promote green banking. There are a few steps to follow- 

  1. One can use online banking instead of branch banking.
  2. Paying bills online
  3. Opening accounts online.
  4. Find a local bank in your area that supports green initiatives.

Small steps taken by everyone can change everything. So let's just go green banking and preserve and protect our environment.
