What is Pride Month?
Every year in June the World LGBTQ celebrates this proud month to dedicate the gay community and their right to dignified life. This festival is celebrated to see how much the rights of homosexuals have come through this glory and how much is still left. This month of pride refers to equality, acceptance of teaching, history and above all love. This month we educate others about how we can free ourselves from all harmful aspects. It's about being proud of who you love.
Why is this month celebrated as a month of pride?
The pride month festival is actually a riot, in fact it is the 1969 Stone-wall riot . On June 26, 1969, the Stonewall uprising took place in New York City. USA, during this time New York police often raided queer bars and harassed queer community. The US Constitution also had laws prohibiting homosexuality.
Stonewall, one of Greenwich Villages most popular gay bars, was frequently raided. On that special day in June, the law was shattered, when the queer community fought and protested for several days. The following year, on the anniversary of the Stone-wall riots, the first official Pride Parade was held on the eve of Christopher Street Liberation War Day and continues to this day.
When was the 2021 Global Pride Day?
Like every year, Global Pride Day was celebrated on 26th June.
Colorful parades, concerts and processions are usually held on this day all over the world. This time around , the festival will not as grand for the Covid epidemic around the world, so many people have celebrated it online.
Since, 1969, LGBTQ people and allies have fought hard to allow the community all its rights, including the right to marry, adopt children, start a family, fight against discrimination and hate crimes and demand recognition. While acknowledging this fight against inequality, we need to be realistic and remember that we still have a long way to go.
Although the landmark verdict in 2018 and the 2014 Nalsa Judgement were enormous steps forward in the growth of LGBT+ rights movements in India, it is said taht there is still long way to go. However, LGBT, individuals in India are still treated unequally. They continue to face violence and discrimination in many aspects of life.
LGBT+ rights should be included in the definition of Human Rights. Article 14,15,19,21, 29 of the Constitution of India not allowing same-sex marriages, as well as adoption, guardianship, surrogacy , IVF and lack of access to safe and LGBT+ inclusive schools, institutions and workplaces. Furthermore, discrimination based purely on sexual orientation violates Article 14,15,21 in relation to Army, Navy, Air Force Act.
Suggestions:
In order to provide a better living environment for the LGBT community , the Indian Governments Home Department must take the lead and collaborate with State governments in sensitizing law enforcement agencies and involving all stake holders in identifying and implementing measures to achieve the constitutional goal of social justice and the basic rule of law.
Hopefully th world will soon accept these lovers with love and affection without any discrimination. May the month be a month of happy pride .
