This film is called “Aarti” and this has been directed by Phani Majumdar. The cast of the film were Meena Kumari, Pradeep Kumar and Ashok Kumar.

The reason why I took up this film for a review is because  this film  actually associates the era or the society structure few years back after independence.

I just wanted to point out the type of relationships that existed in the old times and the society structure at that time after independence in the fifties and sixties.

I just wanted to point out the society structure at that period and I would do that by describing the story of the film.

In this film Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar happens to be Co- doctors in a hospital and they are good friends.  Meena Kumaris father wanted her to get married to Ashok Kumar but suddenly another third person comes into the scene and that was Pradeep Kumar.

Now hear the protagonist is Aarti which is acted by Meena Kumari. And then it so  happens that  Meenakumari happens to go to a place where he suddenly falls into into river and Pradeep Kumar happens to save her life.

Now  Meenakumari grows a soft corner for Pradeep Kumar although there was a relationship between Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari. But then when Pradeep Kumar saves her life, she falls in love with Pradeep Kumar. Pradeep Kumar happens to belong lower middle class family and used to earn very little.

Now going against everyone Meena Kumari  hurries to get married to Pradeep Kumar.

Alhough when Ashok Kumar could not get married to Meena Kumari he eventually Kumar gets married to another lady but he loved Meena Kumari from the depth of his heart.

Now the family turmoil starts as soon as Meena Kumari steps into the house of Pradeep Kumar because it was a joint family and with all problems coming because Pradeep my useed  to earn very little and so we had to join the hospital also for some earning and looking after her in-laws .So then he was associated with Ashok Kumar and this created problem with Pradeep Kumar because Ashok Kumar was previously getting to marry Meena Kumari so this created an issue between the three of them.

Moreover Ashok Kumar was also not happy with his newly married wife although the wife was very good. But he could not accept her as his wife because he always wanted to get married to Meena Kumari.

This kind of relationship issues are found still now but in that period this kind of films were made because these kind of relationships used to come up.

But unlike these days Meena Kumari took a stand with his husband Pradeep Kumar because he wanted to make her family happy. But nowadays women will either get divorced or maintain a double relationship or an affair.

One thing is also interesting that is the character portrait by Ashok Kumar. This character was also very deep, because he wanted to marry Meena but when he found out the she had no love for him, he then took a backseat and concentrated on his life leaving Meena to enjoy her life.

This kind of Films made during that time portrayed  the depth of character.  I'll bring out some more old films and write review on some them so that you get to know about what kind of film existed after independence and the what social lifestyle we have been through  years back in the fifties and sixties.
