Every medical student fears vivas and every student had their own story about what happened to them in those vivas and how they survived it. Here is mine
I still remember the time during my first year viva exam.
I had my anatomy viva a day after my last theory paper. We didn't even get a day for preparation. And anatomy is a subject which have endless topics and more than 5 vivas.
I spent whole night preparing for viva. From revising a mountain of books to cramming different relations of bones, soft tissues, histological slides, i went for my D-Day with only 2 hours of sleep.
I was in A batch which had 50 students first 25 students went for other vivas and other 25 went for histology viva. And my bad luck, i was roll no 26, so i was the ist roll number.
We went inside a laboratory which had 10 microscopes arranged in a row. We have to identify each one of them and write 2 points in favor of them. We were given 1 minute for each slide. After 1 min the bell rang and we run to the next slide.
The 10th slide becomes the master slide of every student on which histo viva was taken.
We have to draw that slide on paper and then examiner comes and asks horrible questions about it.
After this torture, we went to DH( dissection hall) where again 25 spots were made. And there was a jar in which some slips were kept. We have to pick one slip. The number of the slip decides which spot is ours. Luckily i got the spot on which left kidney was kept.
Then examiner came and started asking questions. I answered some and said sorry for some. It went for almost 10 to 15 minutes then i was called for my next viva.
So, my next viva was of bones(osteology). There was a big table in front of examiner on which almost every bone of human skeleton was kept.
The examiner asked me to pick a rib and asked ,"is it of left or of right side. It was first rib whose side determination was difficult and i identified it wrong.
Then he asked me to pick radius bone. I felt relieved as i know almost everything about it. Then he asked me to identify some more bones . It went for almost 10 minutes.
Then after going back to my place i was again called for my 4th viva.
Next was radiology viva where we were shown some x rays and we have to identify the structure seen on them. I was shown an x ray of knee joint. I was asked various questions related knee joint and also other topics.
I again came back to my seat .
After some time, i was called for my next viva.
Next was soft tissue vivas.
The examiner had some trays on his table on which various body organs were kept. He asked me to pick lungs then heart and so on.That was the longest viva. Went for almost 20 minutes.
Then after some time i was called for my last viva.
When i went inside , examiner was sitting and there was a huge blackboard on his one side on which human body was drawn.
He asked me to draw the course of radial nerve on the body. Then again some arteries and nerves and asked various questions about them while i was struggling to draw them on board.
At last i was finished with my vivas for that subject.
The viva started at 10 am and ended at 4 30 pm.
Then i went to hostel ,ate lunch and slept for an hour then again started revising for my next viva after having a cup of coffee.
I hope you liked it.
