In 3rd year of MBBS UG, we have a subject called Preventive And Social Medicines(PSM or SPM). In this subject every student is allotted with a clinicosocial case of any chronic illness (diabetes, hypertension, cancer etc) or a case of a pregnant female, adolescent child or a child who is under 5 years of age. The cases are mostly from rural areas of the place.
We have to follow that case for a whole year. Our job is to know about the cause, prognosis of the disease and to enlighten the patient and the family with every aspect of it so as to help them in managing their condition more efficiently. In short, we aim at promoting and maintaining the overall health of the patient and his or her family. And at the end of the semester there is a final medical viva in which the examiner asks us question regarding the condition , patient and his or her family.
It is a very interesting activity. Every student loves it. It makes them feel like a senior doctor. They become more like a family doctor to those rural families.
I was allotted with a case of a woman who is diabetic since 25 years.
So for this purpose i used to study diabetes so that i can teach them every possible thing about this condition.
I want to share with you different things which every diabetic should know.
So first of all, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, then you should definitely consult a doctor in OPD or at his or her clinic. If you are put on medications ,then take them regularly.
Maintain an ideal body weight by excercising regulary. If you are a busy person ,then atleast take a brisk walk for 30- 45 minutes daily.
Monitor your blood sugar regularly.
Reduce sugar intake. Avoid using sugar but if you have a sweet tooth then replace processed sugar with other source of sweetness like jaggery, dates, etc which are available in market easily
Break your big 3 meals into 5 small meals and eat them at regular interval throughout the whole day so that your blood sugar levels remain within normal range because you know that after meals our blood glucose level rises and big meals means a big spike in blood glucose levels.
Eat a balanced diet which should contain enough proteins and carbs, less fats, less salt.
Eat fruits Some fruits like watermelon, pear have a bit high glycemic index, therefore take them in moderation.
Eat your meal by using “Plate method”. Divide your plate into two halves. Fill one half with vegetables(non starchy). Divide the other half into 2 quarters. Fill one quarter with lean protein(eggs, fish, chicken etc) and other quarter with whole grains ,bread ,roti(carbs).Take water or zero or low calorie drink if you want to.
Take less stress.
If you are diabetic woman and are planning to concieve a child then consult your doctor so that he/she can follow you throughout your pregnancy in order to have a safe pregnancy and a safe childbirth without any complications.
Personal hygiene is IMPORTANT because a diabetic patient is immunocompromised therefore he or she should take care of her hygiene and general health to avoid any unnecessary infection.
FOOT CARE= Take care of your feet. Wash them regularly with warm water.Avoid too hot or too cold water. • Always clip your nails. • Check for any blister, redness, or any kind of color change. If it seems abnormal then consult your doctor. Also if a minor injury is taking more time to heal than normal, this also should be discussed with a doctor. •Wear comfortable shoes. Prefer buying one size bigger than your usual size
Go for eye checkup every 6 months to prevent diabetic retinopathy. These are one of few things you can do to maintain your blood sugar levels within normal range and to avoid any complications. Thank you🙂🕊️
