A Not So Loving Story

In 2010, I was staying in a shared room at my work headquarters. My roommate was five or six years older than me. He was a fine gentleman. I was fond of him. The gentleman was a life insurance agent. Outside his work, he was offering tuition to students. He was the one who used to take care of most household chores, like shopping, cleaning the room, etc. He used to spend most of his time at a nearby tea shop.

One night, he came late. He was looking a little bit disorganised. He sat on his bed and opened a bottle of liquor. The man never drank before in front of me, so I thought of him as a teetotaler. He drank for a while. Then my roommate took out a picture from his purse. He tore the picture into pieces and started sobbing.

I felt uncomfortable. I tried to console him. He picked up his phone, dialled her love interest, and started bawling. The yelling went on for half an hour. Ultimately, the call ended with harsh words.

He was talking about many things. The man started narrating his misadventure with a girl. He knew the girl for a year. The girl supposedly came from Bangladesh. She did not have a valid identity card. As per my roommate's submission, he used his influence and money to get her an identity card.

The girl was staying at a hostel. She did not pay the fees for the hostel. So the landlord threw the girl out of the hostel. Our love-stricken hero arranges a rented room for his love interest. He bought a cot for the girl. Our hero used to visit her every week only to buy groceries and vegetables for the girl.

They went to see a couple of movies. My friend was flying in the air with a violin playing in his ear. In the mean time, the girl also received a desktop from my friend.

But the girl was a shrewd one. By the time she tangled a rich man's lad. As expected, the girl started ignoring the life insurance agent, who exhausted all his savings in search of a loving partner.

The more painful thing for my friend was to find the girl plying on the bike of her latest prey. Her new interest splurged well on her. She even went on holiday to a seaside town with the boy.

All of this was too much for my friend to bear. Even after all of this, he tried to revive his relationship with the girl. But the girl was in no mood to listen to him.

Many years have been passed. My memory about the roommate was subdued by time. One day, I received a friend request on Facebook. It was that long-forgotten smiling face. He posted a profile picture with his spouse and son.
