Fats: Yeah Or Nah??! A Guide

HELLO! I'm back hehe.  Today we're going to read about the how fats are essential for our body. 

There is generally a misconception as in fats cause most of the health problems in our body.  Actually it's depends on the type and the amount of fat that we intake in our diets. First let's look about why fats are essential to survive.

ROLE OF FATS IN HUMAN BODY:

They provide energy:  fats are an important source of energy since they have the capacity of breaking down into basic units called fatty acids. One gram of fat gives 9 kcal energy to the body. 

Structural components: the cell membranes are the structures which protects the cells from harmful radicals and allow substances inside and outside of the cells.  The primary constitution of this cell membranes are triglycerides and cholesterol which are fats.  Also the hormones that are very vital for the normal functioning of the body are produced from fatty acids, cholesterol. 

Wound healing:  Linolenic acid and alpha linolenic acid are types of essential fatty acids which are required for wound healing and reduce the inflammation.

Carrier of Vitamins:   Vitamin A,D,E and K are fat soluble vitamins which means they can be active only if they have fats to get dissolved. So without eating fats, intake of these micronutrients aren't useful at all. 

Effective Brain functioning:  Essential fatty acids such as EPA and DHA are very vital for effective brain functioning.

TYPES OF FATS

fats are majorly classified into 

  1. saturated
  2. mono unsaturated
  3. poly unsaturated

saturated fats are the ones which increase the level of cholesterol more than necessary and therefore increase the risk of atherosclerosis and other heart diseases.  

the MUFA(mono unsaturated fatty acids) should be taken in appropriate ratio with PUFA( polyunsaturated fatty acids) to give numerous health benefits. 

Sources of Healthy Fats:

  1. Chia seeds: these are small in size but are the best source of Omega 3 fatty acid. this fatty acid can relieve heart diseases and risk of various other health related diseases.
  2. dark chocolate: this can provide healthy fatty acids and also other nutrients success potassium and calcium.
  3. eggs: eggs are popular source of protein. dekh white contains most of the protein but the egg yolk actually has several healthy fatty acids. they also contain vitamin d and b  which supports the functioning of liver, nerves, brain and muscles.
  4. Fatty fish: provides Omega 3 fatty acids.
  5. flax seeds:  this provide unsaturated fatty acids such as Omega 3  and they also provide fibre and lignans which have antioxidant properties.
  6. nuts: nuts have village benefits such as they provide healthy fats, protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytosterols.
  7. and ofcourse lean meats and red meats.
