The other day I came across this old Marathi Movie called 'Double Seat' starring Mukta Barve and Ankush Chaudhary. I had seen this movie in the past. But when I was watching it this time I could relate it with my life. May be because a lot of things have changed in these years… the movie tells us a story of a struggling middle class couple who is staying with 3 other family members ( parents and brother) in 1 single room of a chawl. They are very simple people with ordinary requirements. However the wife is a dreamer. She thinks that except for putting the toothpaste back in the tube everything else is possible in this world…She always keeps saying that “Hume life me kuch Baap ( something really big) karna chahiye”…She suggests her husband to buy a bigger house. Her husband who has got a typical middleclass mindset to get settled with minimal keeps refusing this thought. However She convinces him to take a risk with her full support..finally he agrees and gives a token for one flat…then he decides to surprise her with this news …but when he brings her to that house to show her she announces her pregnancy with enthusiasm…hearing this he gets tensed thinking of upcoming expenses and withdraws the flat deal….later on all his family members ( mother and brother) join them in this mission of 'buying a big house' except for his father…as his father is scared of taking such high risks and wants them to adjust in whatever they have…but the couple ignores his tantrums and continues their efforts …they work hard to accumulate the deposit for the new house…and they do manage to save the required money… but unfortunately the bank gets bankrupt and they end up losin all their saved money…..life hits them hard…everything comes back to square one… the man gets shattered…but his wife still gives them all courage to forget everything and move ahead as usual…from next day onwards they all start their usual work holding a deep sadness inside their heart….One day his father comes home and offers him some money and tells him to use it for house deposit.. as he realizes their efforts and appreciates his son for dreaming big for the first time in his life…he says “ we got settled with ordinary…when in old times people were buying properties at far away places we made fun of them thinking who would travel so far. Not knowing that one day in future that area will get developed and may be our children will get to use the property" …he appreciates his son for not repeating the mistake he did years back…finally they come across one new project little far from the city and they book a flat there…and the couple shifts in the new house with their new born…
Simple movie depicting the real struggles of a common middles class family…
But I derived many learnings from this movie..
Happy Reading!!!
