Hey guys, welcome back!

Hope your guys are doing well these days! So, without any further ado, let me get into my today's topic.

Onam is the harvest festival of the people of Kerala. According to them, it's their 'national festival'. As said, it's the major state festival of these people, there they spend a whole week preparing aththa-poo, performing local arts and local rituals and local outdoor games. It's the time when the countryside of Kerala shine brighter with a touch of spring in every keralite mind.
As you all may be familiar with those legends behind the festival such as, it's the celebration of the day when the king Mahabali revisits Kerala after getting his salvation by Vamana, the incarnation of Mahavishnu, I am not going to make you bored by explaining which. Instead I am gonna share with u some of those outdoor sports/activities Malayalees do on the eve of Onam festive day

Here are some of them:

  • Pulikali: even though most of the places perform this activity during Onam season, that of Thrissur is as old as a half century. With the story of a goat victimized by a tiger which is victimized by a hunter, players put forward satires and sarcasms along with their funny attires. It's one of the major game every keralites accept without age consideration.
  • Onathall: oldest of all Onam festivities/ entertainments. Also called as Onappada. It's referred in Madhuraikanchi of Marutanar (sangam literature). It's preformed to commemorate the victory of Indra (deity). With the introduction of this practice to an art form, later keralites started kalaris and such. This art form has prevailed in Kerala till British govt modern era. Now, it's only seen in some places like kunnamkulam in Thrissur. Even though it's a form of fight, no fist attack are involved.
  • Kaikottikali: one of the important entertainment of women of Kerala related to Onam is kaikottikali. It's a dance form of art where the household women play around Aththa-poo accompanied by their own dance steps and clapping of hands.

Likewise, there are other arts and outdoor sports Keralites enjoyed generation by genaration during Onam festival such as kummattikali, uriyadi competition, thumbi thullal etc.. Even though most of them had extincted in most of the regions in Kerala, they still prevailed in the minds of Malayalees with pride or in modernized art forms of Kerala.

Thanks for taking your time in getting far deeper into our state and culture. Will soon be back with another Onam festive related blog.

Happy Onam to you All!!!      Give a ❤️ if you like this one!
