We all had a student in our class who used to take away pens and other stationery with him, even though it didn't belong to him. We thought he might need it more than we need, some people even have a habit of collecting thingsπ.
Do you know that a person can do so, but he doesn't want to do it, he has no other choice. His brain, his thinking mechanism urges him to steal. Well, this is a psychological disorder and is known as Kleptomania. Kleptomania is an urge, an irresistible urge of stealing or committing a theft. In this condition, the person suffering steals such things which are of no use to him. It can even be a thing that has no money value. The thing stolen can even be purchased by that person, I mean the person can afford the thing he stole. But he doesn't have any choice.
In this condition, people feel stressed and feel a lot of tension and get freed from it after committing the theft. There are three major symptoms of kleptomania.
1). Repeated failure to resist the urge to steal.
2) Stealing things that are of no use or value.
3) Feeling stressed and tensed, and suddenly feeling better after stealing.
People in this condition feel remorseful and guilty after committing theft. They don't even use those things and just keep them somewhere. They even return it to the places from where they were taken. Or they just give them away to someone.
Stealing is a crime and kleptomaniacs have often been to jail for such actions. A clinical study revealed that more than 68% of people with kleptomania have been to jails. This condition is quite rare and can begin in adolescence and can stay up to a lifetime. Women are more prone to this disorder than men.
Medication is provided in this case but it doesn't cure this disorder completely. Urges can be controlled through talk therapy and medications.
Studies have also shown that kleptomania can occur along with other psychological disorders as well. Anxiety, substance use, and other impulse disorders are some of the problems seen along with kleptomania.
Kleptomania is a serious impulse disorder and requires immediate assistance and treatment as it can lead to serious legal consequences. It affects the life of the individual and can have a serious mental impact. If you encounter someone with such symptoms, help them and explain them. Tell them there's nothing wrong and support them with love.
