Chunar fort is the land of fantasy and lots of mystery. According to Hindi literature enthusiasts, fort is considered as the “Tilismi Qila” or the magical fort as it appeared in the Hindi novel “Chandrakanta”.
It is located in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh in India has the city name Chunar town situated below the fort. History and Legends are shared by both are common history
It first come in prominence in 1177 AD when Prithviraj Chauhan stablish his fort there. After him a list of king that includes Vikramaditya, Sikander Lodi ,Babar and Akbar used use this fort.
It was built on the banks of Ganga river. It was built from the Sandstone which were used during Maurya period. Its covers an area of 1850 yards. There are lots of places which we can see in the fort they are Bharthari Samadhi Sonwa Mandap, Bawan Khambon ki Chhatri and Residence of Warren Hastings
Some local and tourist said they have seen a ghost in the premises of fort many of them says they have seen ghost in the form of tourist guide. Some says that weird sound coming from the fort. Like the tortured screems of prisoners horrible deaths in the Chunar jail. Many believed that there are a lot of treasure hidden inside the fort at the basement but no one has found the the treasure in the fort. Many Research team search whole area for the treasure but they found nothing.
Fort captures the popular imagination of the Hindi literature Chandrakanta which was published in in 1888 . The author Babu Devkinandan Khatri, used Chunar fort or ChunarGarh as the villain’s Hiding.In this story a beautiful princess named Chandrakanta was to be captured and imprisoned by the ruler, villain of the novel. It was a home to warriors , spies, shapeshifter and all kind of magic so popular was the Khatri's work the fort still mostly referred as the Chandrakanta Chunar.
Our government has done nothing to promote Chunar the walls of the fort crumbling and there is no one to repair them. Due to this many tourist does not want to visit Chunar fort. As there is no taxi stand no tourism booth and public conveniences.
Today Chunar fort stand above Ganga but sadly most of the tourist who visit Varanasi give this a historic fort are not visited, its big draw for the Chandrakanta fans only.
