In the history of nationalism  generally  one individual is credited with the making of a nation we can take example of number of individuals like garibaldi associated with unification of Italy and George Washington associated with the American independent Ho Chi me with the freedom of Vietnam. In the same way as Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of the Indian nation.

Gandhiji was the most influential and respected leader out of all the leader who participated in the freedom struggle. That is why his characteristic as father of nation is not misplaced.

Mahatma Gandhi's actual name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He stayed for two decades abroad and came back to India in January 1915C.E.he spent  most of his time, out of 2 decade in South Africa he went to South Africa as a lawyer and became a leader of Indian community in that territory.

According to historian Chandran Devnesan South Africa has made Gandhiji as “Mahatma”. In South Africa Gandhiji first time using specific method of nonviolence. It was given the name of Satyagraha..

The moderate leader included Gopal Krishna Gokhale who was the acknowledged political mentor of Gandhiji and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The first important public appearance of Gandhiji was at the opening of Banaras Hindu University(BHU) in February 1916 there he was invited not because of his reputation in India but on the basis of his work in South Africa.

Mahatma Gandhi start most of his time of 1917 in Champaran where he fought for the security of tenure for pigeons and for freedom to cultivate the crop of their choice.

In 1918 Mahatma Gandhi was busy with two movements in Gujarat. First of all he demanded for better working condition for worker working in textile mill of Ahmedabad. Then he joined the peasent of kheda  district and demanded form the state  for remission of Taxas after the failure of their crop.

Mahatma Gandhiji Led his world famous Dandi March on 12 March 1930 to abolish the salt march imposed by the British.

To understand Mahatma Gandhiji and his activities writing and speeches of Gandhiji and his contemporary are one of the important sources but, while using this writing we should check that which of these were meant for public and which were not.

Mahatma Gandhi's had always restore to the path of Satyagraha and non violence. That's why he is the legend Soul who contribute in the independence of India.
