There are many things to look for in Gorakhpur, a city on the banks of river Rapti, located roughly at a distance of 250km from the capital of Uttar Pradesh,Lucknow but the one that lures everyone's eyes is the Gorakhnath Mandir primarily based in the heart of the city.
When talking about temples, the first things that pop out in everyone's mind is the beautiful dome shaped structures which is a blend of Indo-Islamic art culture found in many places but this temple doesn't have a dome, rather an upper structure similar in the Dravidian architecture form found in Southern India.
As we enter the temple, there is quite a tight security so that nothing wrong goes over the place because on a week day,the devotees count is about 2 to 3 thousand and on weekends may go as high as 10k and no strings can be set lose for any grievances to take place. As soon as you pass the security, your eyes meet the beauty of a water fountain accompanied by a lake in the left corner where water show is performed every evening at 7p.m. (timing changes as per the season).
A dedicated section is there to take care of your wearables such as belt, shoes wallet etc. at no cost.
Then you come across the huge campus surrounded by many small temples devoted to different Gods. The floor is of pure white marble and the lighting effect at the night just adds the cherry on the cake.
If you are looking to spend 3-4 hours in peace and wish to relax your body and connect with the Almighty you should probably visit Gorakhnath Mandir once.
You can reach Gorakhpur by any means of communication. The nearest Railway station is Gorakhpur Railway Station which,by the way, holds the record for being the longest railway station(approx.1366 metres) in the world. The nearest airport is Gorakhpur Domestic Airport and Kushinagar Airport (at a distance of 50 km). Government and Private Buses are at regular intervals from Lucknow.
I hope you will like this information and please support me if you like this little reading tour of the temple and feel free to drop any suggestions.
Have a lovely creative day.
