Book Review Of "Beloved" By Toni Morrison

This book initially caught me up during my visit to the Library. Although I have heard about Toni Morrison a lot, nothing invited my senses to pick up her books. But the arrangement of her books in the Library made me curious. Today I am proud while writing the review for it.

Before I begin, I would like to let you know that there is a spoiler alert in this write-up.

The cover page of the book made the initial impact on me. I began to feel a missing while reading, yet I believed it to turn out good. As expected, it did. The entire plot was scary and tragic. Sethe, the protagonist, experienced the harsh cruelties of life ever since her childhood. She was afraid that her kids might also have to go through a similar situation. Hence, she found killing them one by one as the best option to let them not suffer. Unfortunately, she could only kill her daughter. And that made people call her a lunatic. But, the terrifying past that Sethe had to suffer led to make choices like these.

I don't know if I should agree or disagree with her activities. From her point of view, many of those make sense. But she caged her daughter Denver and closed her contact with the outer world. I found this to be a kind of possessiveness of Sethe. Due to a lack of socializing, Denver did not accept Paul D into the family.

The presence of the ghost also helps to explain the terrible mental condition that Sethe had gone through. Initially, it made a small presence but later is everywhere. It was the daughter whom Sethe murdered, and it only needed love. Due to this, it was not scary at all. Instead, its state was depressing too. All that it craved for was love. The spirit fought for love, and when Sethe recognized Beloved as her daughter, she surrendered herself. I do not want to elaborate on everything, but I reassure you that it is painful. When I read the comments, I got to attain a better understanding of history. The plot happened after the American civil war, and the protagonists were slaves. Misery entangled their lives. Brutality ruled all over the bodies of women. In short, lifelessness stood ahead on their way.

Toni Morrison, who won the Pulitzer prize for the book, has portrayed every emotion in its sincerity. The style of writing can make it a little strenuous to read. But once you understand, then you are into it.

It is a must-read to stir your emotions.
