Netflix's Wednesday Season 1 Review & Summary - The Movie Culture

STORY

Nevermore is a school for outcasts, and the newest student, Wednesday Addams, epitomises what it means to be too good for society. The moment she stepped inside, the school changed. Ghosts, Monsters, Murders, and Secret Societies emerge. Romance follows suit. There's a missing hand and a mystery that only appears on Wednesdays. There are werewolves, vampires, and sirens. Nevermore possesses everything. Her parents, Gomez and Morticia, attend Nevermore Academy, a private school for outcasts. In a school full of supernatural freaks, from werewolves and vampires to sirens and gorgons, Wednesday stands out as the morbid, death-obsessed weirdo. However, the school contains many secrets, beginning with the mysterious killer in the woods who has been tearing hapless victims to shreds.

Wednesday

Wednesday is at her best, as always. putting bullies from high school in a pool with wild piranhas. After being expelled from multiple schools, an accomplishment she takes pride in, Wednesday is being taken to Nevermore. This school was attended by Morticia and Gomez. Being under her mother's shadow isn't one of the prospects Wednesday sees in life, which she views as a mine of possibilities. Wednesday will do anything to be tortured.

Wednesday. (L to R) Jamie McShane as Sherrif Donovan Galpin, Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams in episode 102 of Wednesday.

Wednesday is an easy story to follow. Girl enrols in a new school, encounters a monster, and engages in monstrous behaviour with Thing (Victor Dorobantu) providing assistance when necessary. It doesn't show up. The only real twist is that Wednesday becomes a gloomy Nancy Drew because the creature poses a threat and a mystery that needs to be solved. Wednesday captures the gothic charm of the Addams Family movies and has a strong bite to it. As Wednesday, Ortega is superb, almost matching Christina Ricci's deadpan perfection with her mouthwateringly sinister one-liners. (Sartre said, "Hell is other people he was my first love) Luis Guzman doesn't really work as Gomez, but it doesn't really matter because the rest of the Addams family—aside from the disembodied hand Thing—is reduced to cameos. Catherine Zeta-Jones is also excellently cast as Morticia. Although Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) obviously understands the part as the school's interfering Principal Weems, Wednesday's show and the other characters fall short. Dorm mom Ricci makes an appearance. Marilyn Thornhill
