Hetmyer’s brilliant effort goes in vain, RCB wins a thriller
Royals Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won a thriller in Ahmedabad in the 22nd match of the ongoing IPL, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by one run on Tuesday. In reply to RCB's 171 for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs, DC stopped at 170 in 20 overs losing 4 wickets. Shimron Hetmyer, the promising all-rounder from West Indies had shown a brilliant effort in the team’s chase for 171, exhibiting an unbeaten 25 ball-53 hitting 4 sixes and 2 fours. DC needed 6 runs to win in the last ball which Hetmyer failed to earn. He was perfectly assisted by the captain Rishabh Pant who also remained unbeaten 58 off 48 deliveries. Apart from Harshal Patel who scalped 2 for 37, other RCB bowlers were not able to impress much on the day. Siraj and Jamieson managed to earn one wicket each.
Delhi Capitals (DC) won the toss and asked Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to bat first. DC made one change on the day. Following Ravichandran Ashwin’s withdrawal from the ongoing IPL due to the rapid growth of Covid-19, Ishant Sharma, the experienced fast bowler got into the playing eleven for the first time in this season's IPL. On the other hand, RCB made two changes. Rajat Patidar replaced fast bowler Navdeep Saini while Daniel Christian came into the first eleven in place of Daniel Sams.
However RCB did not have an impressive start on the day as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, both the batsmen in form departed quickly. RCB's first wicket fell at 30 after Kohli returned to the pavilion. Padikkal also got out immediately as RCB struggled with 30 for 2 wickets in the very 5th over. Kohli played 11 balls and scored 12 while Padikkal made only 17 off 14 deliveries. Patidar was on the crease, scoring 31 to salvage RCB from the early slump. But he took 22 balls being able to hit only 2 sixes. Even Glen Maxwell who was in excellent form so far failed to burst out, returning to the pavilion having scored only 25 off 20 deliveries.
Despite the situation, RCB bounced back, reaching a challenging score of 171 in 20 overs courtesy of AB De Villiers. The South African batting genius single-handedly destroyed the opposition's tight bowling with a magnificent unbeaten 42-ball 75, hitting 5 sixes and 3 fours at a strike rate of 178.57.
From Delhi Capitals, Ishant Sharma was able to manage one wicket at the cost of 24 runs in his four overs. Rabada, Avesh Khan, Amit Mishra, and Axar Patel-all the bowlers also managed to get one wicket each. Only Marcus Stonis had the nightmares as he gave away 23 runs in his one over, being rudely battered by De Villiers.
